Organisation

AFFORD was founded as a UK charity in 1994 by a group of Africans in the UK, in response to concerns that despite thevast number of Africans in the UK who organise themselves and contribute to Africa’s development, Africans wereeffectively marginalised from mainstream development activity directed towards Africa. There was also a realisation that different Africans can and should learn from each other.

Goals shared with own network & EUNOMAD
  • Shift balance of power to Africa:
› Enable young people in Africa to secure jobs.
› Combine Africa diaspora resources with home-based resources to support young entrepreneurs in Africa.
  • Influence African development agenda:
› Provide visibility for Africa self-help efforts towards job creation.
› Support African diaspora groups to influence poverty inthe UK/EU to enable them to maximise their contributions to home/host societies.
  • Root AFFORD firmly in Africa:
› Work more closely with young entrepreneurs in Africa.
› Support network of enterprise development/support centres in Sierra Leone and other Africa.
  • Strengthen AFFORD’s legitimacy and effectiveness:
› Involve stakeholders in all AFFORD’s work.
› Communicate achievements and challenges.

Area of intervention
AFFORD runs projects and programmes which seek to mobilisethe diaspora and other partners to support and invest in sustainable enterprise, particularly SMEs, that willgenerate wealth and jobs, and respond to the job crisis in Africa.

› Africa diaspora communities in the UK, EU and other Western countries.
› Communities in Africa.
› African entrepreneur and young people, and job seekers.

Projects on the theme of "Migration and Development"

Supporting Entrepreneurs and Enterprise Development in Africa (SEEDA)
SEEDA harness the resources of the African diaspora -skills, know-how and finance - to support small andmedium-sized businesses in Africa.

Helping African Influence London (HAIL)
Through HAIL, AFFORD brings Africans in the diaspora together with policy-makers, funders and the private sector to exchange ideas and explore practical ways to maximise the benefits of international migration for Africa and the UK. HAIL is focusing particularly on supporting those businesses engaged in transnational food businesses.

Opportunity Africa
It aims to enhance the skills base and job preparedness of young Africans living in London, making it easier for them to move into full-time employment in the African/international development sector.

Structure of organisation
AFFORD is a charitable company/social enterprise, registered in the UK in 1994, and is accountable to both the Charity Commission and Companies House. It currently has 9 Board Members originating from Gambia, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Zimbabwe and Sierra Leone
