The Millennium Development Goals Report 2010 / United Nations

OMD_Rapport_2010On the eve of the convening of the UN General Assembly in September 2010 in
New York, which will be opened by the review progress made towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) at a high plenary meeting, the
MDG Report 2010 was issued on June 23.

The 2010 Report on the MDGs sets out the progress made in the light of objectives set by the international community in the fight against poverty, ten years after the Millennium Summit.

It focuses on progress in the areas of the fight against poverty, access to education or, increased access to sources of drinking water. The report presents a good chance to reach the target for access to clean drinking water. It also cites big gains in cutting the rate of extreme poverty, getting children into primary schools, addressing AIDS, malaria and child health.

However, it warns about serious delays occurred in the domains of the fight against hunger, gender equity and empowerment of women.

"It is clear that improvements in the lives of the poor have been unacceptably slow, and some hard-won gains are being eroded by the climate, food and economic crises," UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says in the foreword to the Millennium Development Goals Report 2010.
