The Belgium Platform : a collective, open and equal space free for exchange and converse
In a first time, the logic was to anchor the Belgian platform within the provinces in order to reach in a second time the regional and the the national level. In October 2008, a group with local actors involved in co-development and integration organisations was created under the aegis of Transfaires. The Belgian platform "Migration and Development" was the result of this preliminary work of networking. This first draft of the Belgium Platform met the following objectives:
- identify the organisations and/or private individuals involved in co-development actions
- know individuals as well as collective practices
- create a space for debates and sensibilisation
The province of Liege was the first territory of the Belgian platform. Later, the provinces of Namur, Verviers, Mons and Brussels have been reached by the action. In fine, the organisation of the whole Walloon region interested in the network have been made aware.
Locally, the criteria for membership are very open. Indeed, even the private individuals can join the local branch of the network. The local authorities and academics can also joint these local offices. These offices are federated at a regional and a national level. Bimonthly meetings were held from November 2008 to May 2009 in Liege. They brought together a dozen associations in the region of Liege concerned with the relationship between migration and development. In all, the regions of Liege, Namur, Verviers and Mons are well covered with a participation interest. It is of course to further expand coverage to Brussels and Flanders.
